Whenever I start AOL I receive an MS WIndows notice that says "you must
restart your computer to apply these changes." There appears to be no
relevance to anything. I simply click the restart later option & move on. Any
clue what's going on?

thanks.

Yeah, your computer is infected with a virus. The virus' name is AOL.
Unfortunately, the only true way to remove this virus is to reformat
your hard drive and reinstall Windows and all your programs and devices.

SOMEONE woke up on the wrong side of the support bench this morning.

I think what Alias is TRYING to say before inserting his foot into his
esophagus is, "AOL software may have bugs with Vista, as a lot of programs
have small issues here and there. Your best bet is to contact AOL support or
do some searching on Google or AOL Support, see if anyone is having this
problem as well. More than likely there's a workaround, I just don't know
what it is off hand. You might consider another ISP as well. AOLs client
application is notoriously buggy, bloated and now a days quite unnecessary
for true internet enjoyment."

Right Alias? Something like that?

Get rid of AOL . It is a virus by itself. Very Proprietary and not a very good ISP. AOL causes many undesirable issues

No, I stand by what I said. No computer should be subjected to the AOL
virus. Vista has nothing to do with it.

AOL is not my default. I keep it for its good points. For example, I haven't
found a better Internet radio service anywhere else and the price is right,
free.

If anyone has a real answer I'd appreciate it.

What happens if you do restart, same message?

I should've clarified one part of my first post. Bostonblakie can
uninstall AOL, cancel their service, if he's a subscriber, and keep on
using SHOUTCast and XM Radio for free, but SHOUTCast only runs on
WinAmp, which most people already have installed or pre-installed on
their computers, and the service itself is actually Free Internet Radio
(you don't have to subscribe to it or be a member of AOL to use it).

I'm listening to Shoutcast right now, using Linux Ubuntu and a
combination of Streamtuner and XMMS. I can record the songs and it will
separate the songs from the chatter or commercials and save them as
MP3s. I also have access to Live365, Punkcast.com, XIPH and Google
Stations with Streamtuner. No need for AOL and no need for Windows.

That's pretty neat. I assume you use Streamtuner to record the
SHOUTCast stuff and XMMS to convert it to mp3?

Not sure how it works. I just know it does :-)
I've been a Windows user
all my life--well, no, actually I take that back. In high school we only
used Macs, and even back in the Jurassiac age (late 80's) I looooved
those things.

My first computer was the first Mac, the one with 128K memory and no
hard drive. The Image Writer (legal size), Mac, Mouse, Keyboard and
external diskette drive cost me $4000. I sold it in Venezuela for $6000
and have been using PCs ever since.
But it's been Windows for me ever since, mostly to save
money and customize it as I like.

Save money? Windows costs money. Linux is free and as far as
customizing, you won't care for Vista.
I usually format my PC a few times a year to get all the MS crud out of
it. Next time I format, I think I'll install Ubuntu (I've got the CD
ready but then again, I've got the Vista CD ready,too...I'm thinking of
dual-booting to give both a spin).

I bet you'll be in Ubuntu more than Vista and when you are in Vista, it
will be for Windows Updates, AV updates and anti malware updates.

I enjoyed reading all of the posts in reply to my question. None of them
actually solved the original "problem" which seems to be merely a nuisance,
but I picked up lots of good info re: Internet radio. As a retired geezer
it's hard to keep up with all of the "new" tech stuff but I'm giving it a
try.

I'm new here and just saw your post. I found a way around this but...
Since I'm the computer "problem fixer" in this household, I've been looking
everywhere for a solution. My problem is exactly the same as yours. The
only fix I've found has to be repeatedly done every time I boot up. What a
pain in the butt!!!

Right click on the AOL symbol in your taskbar in the lower right. Left
click on System Information. Wait until the info has completely come in, and
then select AOL software. The second box down, that begins AOL 9.0 VR,
select (right hand side) Quick Restore. Follow the prompts so the Quick
Restore runs and then close out the System Information. AOL can now be run
as usual.

Unfortunately I've found you have to do this every darn time you boot up.
BTW, when you get the AOL connectivity warnings close them by clicking the X

Thanks for the info. The AOL problem originally cited back in May has somehow
been corrected. I didn't actually do it myself so the possibilities as to how
it happened are infinite. Somewhere along the line I did something else that
probably zapped the problem as an ancillary benefit.

Well, if you, or anyone else, knows how to correct the problem, I'd sure like
to know how to fix it. This only happens on my laptop and it's such a pain.

Thanks,
Patsy
