Windows not shutting down successfully

I've been running Vista Ultimate x64 since early November and since that
time I've used various Beta and RTM drivers for much of my hardware. More
recently, I think every driver and utility I was using was RTM and
Vista-compatible, so I decided I would clear the decks by re-installing
Vista.

One of the problems I had experienced for the majority the 4+ months was
that often Vista would not shut down correctly. It would sometimes hang at
the desktop, sometimes at the 'logging off' screen and sometimes at the
'shutting down' screen. I think these hangs seem to have occurred after
gaming sessions; AFAIK it never hung when I'd simply done some browsing &
checking emails etc. On a number of occasions, I'd get an indication that
CTHelper (Creative Audigy) and DWM (desktop windows manager) were hanging
and I could elect to kill the processes, though it rarely made a difference.

The other night I re-installed Vista (which was quick and painless) and
since then I've installed Office 2007, ASUS AI Tools, ASUS PC Probe, a few
other utilities, Avast AV, BF2 & STALKER. Last night I applied some more
updates via Windows Update - when it came to restart the machine it seem to
'hang' at the 'Applying Updates' page as it was restarting. After 20 mins I
forced a reset, and when it restarted it stated that it was applying the
patches again. After a minute or two, I was back in Windows and I could
check the Event Log - it stated that around half a dozen
programs/drivers/services had 'timed out' when shutting down. I can't
remember the details but I was getting the impression that these programs
were probably getting stuck because another program was misbehaving - ie I
don't think these programs are the route cause of the problem.

I had a quick game of STALKER and again when it came to shutting down it
hung at the shutting down screen. I can't have done much other than browse
the web, check my email and play STALKER in that session.

I know that the Creative and Nvidia drivers are still ropey even though they
are RTM, but they both seem to work fine on my machine.

I'm a bit short on inspiration here. I haven't re-installed a lot of the
stuff that I am planning to but already I've noticed a problem. It's more
that likely to be one of the hardware drivers or an always-on utility like
PC Probe, but how exactly to I narrow it down? I could try to use a process
of elimination by to some extent, but I was wondering if anyone had an
inspriration on a more clever route... Is there a more direct way of
determining which program is refusing to respond at shutdown.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I'd like to report that I am also experiencing the same problem, that is, my
laptop will take forever at "logging off" or "shutting down". This happens
on 2 cases:

1) when I select log off: when this happens after selecting log off, I
normally press the power button which puts my laptop to sleep mode. Then I
press the power again and when teh laptop comes back up, it will go over the
hurdle of logging off. The logon screen comes on, but I cannot log on, and
the mouse cursor if missing. The message that comes on says something about
resources being unavailable, as it is being used up by another user. I can
only use my keyboard to navigate to the shutdown button and shut down.
2) When I select shutdown: the system wull stall at the "logging off" stage,
and I have to press the power button to sleep mode and power on again as in 1
above. This time, after coming back from sleep mode, the logon screen does
not come on. Instead, the system will proceed to shutdown.

Hope someone in Microsoft is reading this, and come up with a fix soon.

Eng Hee.

Same problem on an Acer laptop, new install of Vista Home Premium. After
going into SLEEP mode, refuses to wake up. AND when trying to shut down, goes
into permanent "shutting down" screen... Nasty. Didn't have this with Beta
versions or Ultimate version on tower PC; actually, only started a month ago
on this laptop.

Thought we got rid of these shutdown problems.

Try this.

Turn off your router before shutting down or restarting. Works for
me.

date may help?

I've managed to overcome the 'shutdown blues' by working with HP
support
Although I have the latest bios, they suggested downloading and
installing the latest bios update, they said it also included various
driver updates
There was scant information available during the update
But, sure enough, when it finished, I was able to shutdown normally
for the first time in weeks

I have a DELL Inspiron 1720 and my laptop also hangs at the "shutting down"
screen. This shutdown issue seems to happen with every new version of
windows as I experienced it with 98 ME XP and now VISTA. Hopefully they'll
come up with a solution soon coz this is really annoying!!!!
