Windows & MSN Messengers

Here's the deal... I like MSN messenger, and my mom likes
Windows messenger (as it is integrated with Outlook
Express and contacts show up as either online or offline
in Outlook Express). I have downloaded both. Now... Since
my mom uses the computer more than I do, I have set MSN
Messenger so it won't start up when when she turns the
computer on. And have set Windows Messenger to run
automatically and run when the computer is turned on. Now
here's the problem. Everything seems to be working fine
it logs here in and everything automatically (MSN
Messenger doesn't run--so that's ok), however the little
buddy icon does not show up in the taskbar unless Windows
Messenger has been opened manually or she has sent
someone an IM through Outlook Express.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem??

Greetings Cody,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause some of this
behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the
System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options,
then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Thanks for the quick response. No, I do not have NAV 2003
installed; I am using NAV 2002. I've tried messing around
with things, but nothing seems to be working so far.
Right now I'm going to uninstall Windows Messenger (using
that special "code") and reinstalling it back on.
Hopefully that'll do the trick by rewriting the registry
or whatever needs to be done.

Hi Cody,

That may do it, although reboot (or simply log off the Windows XP User Account and back on)
to make sure the settings are cleared completely. Also, which version of Windows Messenger
is this?

Nope, that didn't do it either. Windows Messenger
(msmsgs.exe) IS running, but the icon just doesn't show
up in the taskbar. Unless it is opened through the start
menu (or opening the main window/screen). I'm using
Windows Messenger 4.7. For some reason MSN Messenger
(msnmsgr.exe) must be preventing it eventhough it isn't
running. I have also tried using the Set Program Access
and Defaults feature in Windows and also restarting the
computer, still no help.
