Windows Mobile Device Center not finding AT&T 8525

I just got a new Vista machine and a new AT&T 8525. I downloaded and
installed Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1, but it won't find the 8525. The
phone is connected via USB, and it's getting power. I've read the official
Microsoft troubleshooting guide
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter/troubleshooting.mspx),
but it wasn't much help.

What I've learned is that I'm supposed to get a device installed under
"Network Adapters" in Device Manager, but I don't get it. When the
installation happens, I get a small icon in task bar saying it's installing a
device driver, then it changes to something like "unrecognized device", and I
don't get the network adapter.

The Troubleshooting Guide also suggests I should have something under a
section called "Mobile Devices" under Device Manager, but I don't get this
either.

I turned off the ZoneAlarm anit-virus and firewall during the installation.
I've removed and reinstalled WMDC with the same results. I've checked that
the checkbox in "USB to PC" is selected on the 8525 (tried it both ways).
Under the "Connections..." menu option in the ActiveSync section of the
connections on the phone, the "Synchronize all PCs using this connection:" is
checked, and it is set to the only option: 'USB (the appostrophe is in the
literally in the setting).

I have no other ideas. Can anyone help me?

Crandaddy,

I'll try to get something going here, since your questions have been posted
here for some time with no responses. I may not have the solution you seek,
but perhaps my comments will shake something loose.

First, let's agree that the basic problem is that the Windows Mobile Device
Center (WMDC) can't connect to the AT&T 8525 USB phone, and that your running
the latest version 6.1 of the WMDC.

Next, lets agree on the meaning, in your post, of your following statement:
"I've learned is that I'm supposed to get a device installed under 'Network
Adapters' in Device Manager, but I don't get it."

Are you referring to the following statement in the Microsoft
troubleshooting guide (referring to Device Manager), Step 4:

"Look under the "Network adapters" node for "Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote
Adapter". If this is not present, skip to step 5. Otherwise, right-click
"Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter" and choose to "Uninstall...."

If this is what you're referring to, then there is nothing to install. The
guide is telling you to uninstall the Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter
(if present). If not present, skip to Step 5.

Step 5 instructions read as follows:

Look under the "Mobile Devices" node for "Microsoft USB Sync". If this is
not present, skip to step 6. Otherwise, right-click "Microsoft USB Sync" and
choose to "Uninstall"

When you connect your USB phone, it should appear in Device Manager under
Mobile Devices. The instruction asks you to look there and if you find
Microsoft USB Sync, uninstall it. If it's not there, skip to Step 6.

Step 6 reads as follows:

Disconnect and reconnect your device. Your device driver will re-install and
Windows Mobile Device Center will launch.

Does this interpretation make sense to you? Does it help clear up any
questions you have about what it is you're supposed to do? Anyone have any
comments to add?

Post back on your reaction.

Hi Freddy,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, that was the main item that led me to conclude
that, if things were working, I would have had the device drivers. There were
some other troubleshooting steps online I saw that made reference to them as
well. Since they didn't get created, so they can't be removed, basically the
troubleshooting steps are really nothing more than "disconnect and reconnect
the device", which I've done repeatedly. WMDC never sees the unit, and the
device drivers do not automatically get installed.

Thanks!

Crandaddy,

Well, I'm not sure we're communicating. Even so, you may have a corrupted
file causing a problem with Windows being able to recognize your USB phone.
Sometimes resolving USB device recognition issues like you seem to have can
be resolved by deleting the INFCACHE.1 file, which can get corrupted with bad
data and cause issues like you appear to have. The file is located at
C:\Windows\inf. There, scroll down to the INFCACHE.1 file and right click it
and select delete. To do this, you will likely have to give yourself
permission to delete it, because of Windows built-in Security. Just right
click the file, select Properties and then click on the security tab. Let us
know whether this procedure does anything. Sometimes it does and sometimes
not. After you finish this procedure, connect your phone to a USB port.
Post back on the results.
