A friend is using windows messenger and want to control it so that it only
starts up when she wants it to.

In properties it has been unchecked to start with windows Start-up, and also
the box in OE has been cleared, but it still starts whenever her computer is
started.

She is using XP Pro.

Any help please?

Thank you very kindly for that S.

I did go in and have a look at it and tried the third solution as it looked
the easiest but when that is applied Windows Messenger will not run at all
so I had to undo it. She still wants to be able to use the program when she
wants to, so I will send her an edited version of that page.

Hi Joe,

I would suggest, un-checking msmsgs from Start/Run/Msconfig/Startup and if
need be remove the runkey from here: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Run
MSMSGS - "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

Once done, PIN Windows Messenger to the Start Menu from All Programs and
activate when wanted/needed.

Tip: To clear un-checked items in Msconfig/Startup

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup (Line 148)

Thanks Kelly, I have forwarded the necessary information on to her and we
will see how that goes for her.

If I was to run the script on Line 148, would that prevent those programs
that I have unchecked from running at all or is it just a clean up?

Thanks to all for you help and advice.

Most welcome, Joe. Hope all goes well there. As for your question, it just
removes the entry from Msconfig/Startup and the run key from the registry.
Which means it won't run on startup but it doesn't remove the program nor
hamper its performance in any other way.

Thanks Kelly I will use it now, I was going to before but I squibbed it.
