Windows Messenger will not log on

No matter what I do I cannot get logged on with Windows Messenger. I tried
downloading Msn messenger 6.0 and it works fine but it will not work with
remote assistance. When I open Windows messenger and try to log on I get the
following message: We are unable to sign you in to Net messenger, possibly
because of a problem with the server or with your internet connection,
please make sure that you are connected to the internet. I really don't care
about Windows Messenger it is just that I need to connect remotely to a
friends computer and Msn Messenger 6.0 will not do this for some reason..
I am online and checked that net service was operating fine.

I have the exact same problem, its really bugging me,
neither windows messenger nor MSN messenger will log on
giving error messages like "retry your password or sign
in name" when i know it is absolutely correct and no this
problem doesn't go away even if i turn of the XP firewall
nor has it to do with the status of .NET messenger
service at that time. The funny thing is at the same time
Alvaro messenger (a linux MSN messenger clone) in linux
logs on in a second! So its probably yet another bug in
an autoupdate or ServicePack in XP? Or XP supplying a
default wrong password it has saved.
So try this remove all .NET passwords stored, take XP
control panel, goto user accounts, select your username,
then from the left hand tasks pane click on manage my
network passwords. Remove all passwords. Now open MSN
messenger and manually type in and logon to MSN, it
worked for me.. JJ

I will give it a try but the error message comes up before it even has a
chance to log on.
