Windows Messenger vs MSN Messenger

Dave

I have a NAT router with an internal network, so no computers are attached
directly to the Internet.

I have been plagued with the file transfer problem associated with Windows
Messenger since my router is not a Universal Plug-n-Play NAT router.

Now with MSN Messenger file transfer works fine.

What is different between Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger in the file
transfer area? Why was Windows Messenger lumbered with requiring a UPnP
device and MSN Messenger apparently was not.

As a professional user, I really do not want all of the MSN advertising. MSN
Messenger is geared more towards a home user. Why am I forced down the MSN
path because of the file transfer issue?

Thanks for any insights :)

Greetings Dave,

MSN Messenger 6 allows two new ways to send files, the first, it's able to "reverse" the
connection (if your contact can't connect to you to download the file, it will attempt to
connect you to them instead), and if that fails, it's able to send the file directly through
the Messenger server (the same way normal text is sent).

The next version of Windows Messenger (5), should have some new file transfer capabilities,
however I'm not yet sure exactly if they will go as far as MSN Messenger 6 does when it's
released.
