Windows messenger GONE WILD

Can anyone tell me can you STOP windowns messenger from
communicating on the net? I run ZA firewall and if you
deny it, it thens attempts hundreds of times to go
outbound and slows down your computer. XP updates loaded
this monster in to my computer and I want it stopped. I
dont want anything going out bound on my box that I don't
know who/what is doing it.. Your Help will be appreciated.

You can disable "Windows Messenger" as follows:

Open "Windows Messenger" and from the Toolbar select
Tools > Options > Preferences and uncheck:

"Run this program when Windows starts" and
"Allow this program to run in the background", then
click OK.

Another thing it might be, if it's not windows messenger,
is the windows messenger service. To disable this, go
to start->programs->admin tools->services and set
messenger properties to disabled

It is not a good practice to disable the Messenger Service in Windows XP.
When you disable this service on any operating system, it is no longer
available for receiving legitimate messages, such as administrative alerts
and notifications from antivirus programs.

Then why is MS going to release "messenger service" as "Disabled" by
default in SP2?
You are correct in not receiving administrative alerts, but that
applies to PC's connected to a domain or workgroup, and although many
home users may have workgroups, I doubt they send administrator alerts
from PC to PC or a PC designated as the administrative console.
As far as antivirus messages - I'd have to research that, as NAV,
McAfee and BitDefender all notify us of Viral activity, both at the
user's client, and in the user's event logs - just the administrative
alert will/is not sent to the admins console on the workgroup/domain.
