Windows Messenger Fix Doesn't Work for Me

Hello.

I installed MSN Messenger 6 then uninstalled it. Since then, I can no longer auto log-in to Windows Messenger 5. I've looked around here for a solution and tried the suggestion offered to most: "To fix your problem you'll need to navigate to the My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService key. . .then choose Delete. Confirm the operation and now the MessengerService key should be completely gone." Done. It didn't work.

Is there something else that could conflict with this fix? Would like to restore the auto-login feature if possible. Thanks.

try this
Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll

Forgot to mention what I've tried outside of the popular Registry fix...

- Uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Messenger 5.0 twice
- Restored all security/privacy defaults on IE (didn't know if they were tied to Mess. 5 somehow)
- Removed all MSN Messenger 6 files as far as I could tell (used cut+paste command line in 'Run...', and I got that command from here)
- I even cleaned all MSN Messenger references out of the registry with a regclean-type utility. It was only two pieces of info in places that didn't seem critical, so it couldn't have been harmful

This is incredibly frustrating. Any help is appreciated. I hope I've provided the info needed to give help. If you need more info, please ask. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip, Jerry. But it came up short.

I ran the command, tried Messenger, gave it the info, clicked "auto sign me", entered, exited, tried to enter again, and had to enter my password again.

To make sure I didn't do it wrong, I deleted the Registry material from the popular fix, ran the softpub command, rebooted my machine (incase the softpub thing needed a reboot), ran the softpub thing again, logged into messenger (clicked on auto sign), exited, and restarted Messenger only to be prompted for password again.

Also, just so you know, I do have 'run mess at start' and 'run mess in background' checked in preferences. For whatever reason, this little Messenger blunder is driving me CRAZY. I'm becoming Type-A all of a sudden, and I don't like it.

Again, thanks for your help, Jerry. Maybe somebody else has the winning tip.
