I'm using Windows Messenger v5.0.0381 under Windows XP Professional with
Service Pack 2 applied.
I have a couple of contacts in my list which I wish to remove. When I
attempt to remove either of the contacts, after confirming that I'm sure
about removing them, I get a dialog as follows...
<contactname> could not be deleted. Please try again later.
....and when I click on the OK I get signed out of Messenger. The contact is
not deleted. If I attempt to move these contacts to another group I get a
similar message to the above advising that the contact cannot be moved. The
contact is then added to the target group (i.e. the group I wanted to move
them to) but not removed from the source group (i.e. the group I wanted to
move them from).
I've attempted to find where my contact list is held and come across the
following promising looking REG_BINARY entries...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService\ListCache\.NET
Messenger Service
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService\ListCacheU\.NET
Messenger Service
....but I presume from the name of the keys that the values held are just
cached copies of my contact list which must be held server-side somewhere
because if I visit another PC running Messenger and sign into it with my
account then I am shown the same contact list.
How can I remove these contacts that I no longer want?
