Windows Messenger 5.0 vs. MSN Messenger

Hi,

I understand that there's quite some difference betweeen
the MSN and Windows Messengers. Personally I prefer the
Windows Messenger version because it keeps the UI clutter
at a minimum.

However, it would be nice if it supported the smiley icons
of MSN Messenger, so that when I communicate with people
using MSN, I get the proper icons instead of random text. :
)

Earlier on I tried installing a beta of Windows Messenger
5, but it severely fscked up my system, so I'm a bit
reluctant to try the new release. In addition, I can't find
any changelog for it, and MS seems to still recommend v4.7
of it.

So, is there support for the new icons and smilies from MSN
Messenger in Windows Messenger 5.0? Or is it only for the
people wanting to use Ink so send IMs? Does it have any
other compelling reasons for upgrading?

To answer my own post: No. And 5.0 had some bad font
problems that made me install 4.7.2009 on top of it again.
(That was the only way to uninstall Messenger 5.0, for
those who need to know later.)

I simply want an 4.7 release with smiley support, is that
too much to ask from Microsoft? ;)

They have totally ruined the thing that made me use
Messenger in the first place: The clean, no-nonsense UI and
ease of use. MSN 6 is an insult to UI people everywhere.

Anyway, rant off. :)

Greetings Alexander,

Windows Messenger since its inception (4.0) has supported emoticons (smileys), albeit they
don't include the new nor animated ones in MSN Messenger, but the original set is still
there. It's possible you simply have them off, to check, open up the main Windows Messenger
window, click the Tools menu, then Options, verify that 'Show graphics (emoticons) in instant
messages' is checked and click OK.

To uninstall Windows Messenger 5.0, go to the folder

Documents and Settings -> All Users -> Application Data

You should see a folder named Windows Messenger or
Windows Messenger_5.0.0468. Inside the directory is a .msi
installation file. Right-mouse click on it and then choose Uninstall.

NOTE: You may have to unhide the directory for Application Data.
