When I attempt to start Windows Media Player the program shuts down without
opening. Can someone tell me how to fix this.

Try reinstalling WMP.
 
Your copy of WMP may be corrupt. Download a copy of WMP10 below,
and install it overtop of your current version, it designed that way. Do
not install or update to WMP11, too many problems encountered at present.
