Windows Media Player wont install/run correctly

I've been troubleshooting a problem with Media Player not playing web streams
either in the browser or in the main program. I have tried every thing I can
think of. I've messed around with different settings, I've uninstalled and
reinstalled multiple different versions to no avail. Now I can no longer
even install the latest version of the program, WMP 11. I had been using it
already, but when it failed to play streaming video, I rolled it back to a
previous version. When that didn't work, I tried to reinstall and I get the
error during installation that it needs to connect to the internet in order
to download something during installation. It's unable to do so. I've
turned my firewalls and things off trying to clear a path to connecting, but
nothing works. It won't allow the setup to proceed. I'm wondering if this
problem of connecting during setup might be related to the problem of playing
streaming video online. Incidentally, programs like Quicktime still work. I
should note that there are no program crashes when it tries to play streaming
video, it just sits there like it's not being asked to do anything. The only
error information I can suss out is that it "can't play the file"....a file
specifically made for it. Example: NASA.gov's streaming video of NASA TV.
Won't work with WMP, but will work with Quicktime.

I need to solve both problems. I need to figure out how to let WMP11
connect while installing so that it can finish installation. And I need to
watch video streams both in the program and in the browser plugin.

I'm on XP SP2
Running up to date browser.
I have alway-on cable internet....
I'm desparate for help here. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate
it.
