Windows Media Player 9 Uninstaller ... coming soon

Due to massive problems I had after installing WMP9 & the associated DRM
components, I managed to uninstall it and get back to v8.1, although
the method was very nasty indeed.

As a result of this (what turned out to be a very successful) endeavour,
I have decided to start a project to enable others to benefit from my
little experiment.

The objectives are defined as follows:

1) ... Remove all WMP9 updates, DRM updates and associated resources,
including registry keys.

2) ... Reinstate the default (install time) software and registry keys
using the Windows install disc.

3) ... Package the whole thing up into a single executable and
distribute with the source and documentation.

4) ... Beta test In-House and In-Field with any guinea pigs ... ahem ...
volunteers willing to collaborate.

My current solution is a "sledgehammer" approach which requires using a
secure-wipe tool to batch-wipe certain system files simultaneously from
three distinct locations:

\Program Files\Windows Media Player
\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

And then purging the registry of all association with WMP, followed by a
"repair" type installation of XP.

This is hardly a neat solution, but it definitely works ... and you
don't need to do a "fresh" install ... just a "repair".

What I'm aiming for is a clean and simple approach similar to the way
DirectX Eradicator works.

Any and all assistance would be welcomed, so please feel free to Email

sorry to say, but system restore does what you spent all that time making.

Unless you have System Restore turned off, like I did.

This is not uncommon. Certain virus infections can only be solved by
turning off System Restore, as I am only too painfully aware.

Even more common, are scenarios where System Restore "fails" because the
number/type of changes made to the system are too great to undo. I have
experienced this a number of times, so it is real.

If you're talking about - set restore point - install WMP9 - return to
restore point - in the space of five minutes ... well that's one thing,
but most people don't have problems manifest immediately, and by the
time they discover them ... too late.

The bottom line is, there is no justifiable reason why *any* software
should not have an uninstall capability. It is only a damn media player,
for God's sake.

We've heard this "can't uninstall" nonsense from MS before with, amongst
other things, DirectX. They were proved wrong before, and I'm about to
prove them wrong again.

Hi!

Use System Restore in Windows. Windows Media Player 9 Series will be
removed and the previous version of the Player will be restored.
I got possible solution here too:-

Interesting link, thanks, but from what I read I get the impression that
Windows is still "locked in" to the WMP9 base subcomponents and DRM,
even though the "player" has been removed. I'm proposing total
eradication, without depending on System Restore which may not work for
everyone, for various reasons.
