Windows Media 11 error

I get the following error when trying to clink links on a site I go to:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the specified protocol is
not supported. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a
different transport protocol (for example, "http:" or "rtsp:")."

The site worked perfectly for 2 months that I've had Vista, but suddenly I
get this error. I'd love to reinstall Windows Media Player, or repair it but
I can't find anyway to do it. Since it worked previously, and since I
haven't typed anything into a browser window as it suggest on the error,
there must be something askew with Win. Media. I have also done this:

"If Windows Media Player supports the protocol and you still cannot play the
content, verify that the Player is configured to use all of its supported
protocols.

To configure protocol settings
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Network tab.
In the Streaming protocols area, select all the protocol check boxes.
Note The supported protocols can be used only to stream digital media files.
Windows Media Player cannot be used as a browser."

All the protocols are selected, and I have not adjusted any settings in
windows media, it literally just started doing this, when I lost power and
the system shut down due to lack of power. Admittenly this is probably the
cause, it's probably corrupted a file, but HOW DO YOU REINSTALL the program?

Thanks!

add/remove section- remove-repair.
If that fails
Visit Microsoft and d/l the newest version and re-install it.
or reinstall it from the C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player using setup_wm.exe

But chances are that the page you're accessing may no longer exist.

Windows media does not exist in the add/remove section. Downloading the
newest version will not install either, because it says my installed version
is newer. So either won't work.

You didn't say how this worked.

I show this link for troubleshooting.
I just ran thru my HP recover, and even it doesn't show the media player either.
That's the route's I'd go. but if it's just one page, I'd 1st weigh if itreally is the media player, or how bad do I want to fix it for that page.

C:\Users\your_name_here\AppData\Roaming\Media Player Classic
this may just be on my machine.

This is a shot in the dark.
this folder
C:\Users\your_name_here\Local Settings\Microsoft\Media Player
if you take and move this entire folder, out of media players path, it might rebuild itself with all new files. And all new settings.
I wouldn't delete it, just move it somewhere [another drive] that you know media player will fail to find it.
Then if it boots fine, recheck this folder and compare to the one you moved. If not, just move that folder back.
I was looking for a winmed.ini file, but can't find one. If you find one, just rename it, and boot media player. this should be a config settings.
if it isn't found , programs usually rebuild with one using default settings. If not you always rename it back to original name.

I can't think of anything past check the troubleshooting link above 1st.
