windows mail stops downloading after 8 messages - 30 + to go.

Try to login using 'WebMail' link at www.bigpond.com, and look at your
recent message in the Inbox folder. Probably it is the one causing
problems. Then try to delete all insignificant messages and use your
Windows Mail client again to see whether it can finish downloading
messages this time.
 
Technically speaking, the message is malformed, and contains unescaped
".MsoChpDefault" line, which should be encoded as "..MsoChpDefault". You
may see which client software was used to compose the violating message,
and contact it's manufacturer to report this bug.
 
I could not log even though putting the username and password, but the system
was telling me the of my e-mails I got wit hwindow mails
 
That typically indicates a 'stuck' email on the server.
Log in via webmail (using your browser), sort the messages there by date,
delete the first 8 (oldest) messages, then try Windows Mail again.
