Windows Mail problems

My Windows Mail started playing up on me yesterday. It was working fine
before hand, but since starting up my laptop yesterday it's been a bugger.
There's seems to be several things wrong - I hope someone here can help me:

1. I can't receive any e-mails. When I am trying to receive an e-mail I get
this error message:
"An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'mail.thereddwarfzone.co.uk',
Server: 'mail.thereddwarfzone.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL):
No, Error Number: 0x80004005"

My account details are correct and have not been changed since they were
working yesterday.

2. My 'Inbox' says there are 6 new messages, however when I click to view my
'Inbox' I am told:
"There are no items in this view."

3. There is one message in my 'Deleted Items' folder. If I click to view
this message it says:
"Message could not be displayed
Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this
message. "Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again.

My laptop isn't low on memory or disk space. I am also unable to delete this
message. If I try to delete it, either by clicking on it and pressing Delete
or by emptying my 'Deleted Items' folder, I am presented with the following
error message:
"An unknown error has occurred."

4. My 'Junk E-mail' folder has 5 new messages, however on clicking the
folder I am again told "There are no items in this view." On trying to empty
my 'Junk E-mail' folder I am again presented with a "An unknown error has
occurred." message, and on clicking "OK" another message appears:
"Some of the items in the 'Junk E-mail' folder could not be deleted.
An error has occurred."

I am using Windows Mail version 6 on Windows Vista. Any help would be much
appreciated.

A likely cause for this error message is your antivirus.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled.
Replace with a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

Thanks for your help but I have been using Norton Internet Security on my
laptop since April and have not experienced this problem on my e-mail before.
So I do not think that is the problem.

Another thing I forgot to mention - My laptop didn't shutdown properly. My
laptop turned off because the battery had died on it, and I didn't turn it on
again until the next day and thats when I started having problems with my
e-mail, so maybe it had something to do with not being shutdown properly??

Thanks,
Dan.

I have just had a problem with an error message in my outbox, couldn't delete
it and nothing else would send after that, just stayed in my outbox. Found
this link suggested by someone else and it works:
ttp://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas
Seems to be a better version of Windows Mail called Windows Live Mail. It
automatically trys to import everything. If it doesn't import everything, you
can at least do it manually as it shows everything from the old Windows Mail.

Hope this helps.

Since you seem to know more than the experts here, why bother
asking questions here?

Other people have been using the POS for months without incident
but got bitten eventually. Remember... Pride goeth before a fall

Norton issues can crop up at any time. After 6 or 8 months and even after 1 year.Your issue is caused by Norton. Believe me. Follow the advice that is given and it should solve your issue.

Remove Norton using their on line tool available at the Symantec site. Install Avast free which will do as well in performance and finding virus as did Norton.

Don't listen to that so called "expert". It's not your antivirus. It's
actually a microsoft problem that they don't know how to fix. It happened to
me and I was given a website to download a fix for it and it took the email
that was stuck right out. I have to look for the site though. I'll write
back when I find it.

Your diagnosis is incorrect. Pendo86 does not have an email
stuck in the Outbox.

See the reply from Julian in the next block. That is the site that will
fix

That utility will not actually fix the underlying problem,
ie. what causes the message to be stuck in the out box,
but provides a workaround.

If you use Norton or McAfee there's a good chance that you
will have to "fix" the problem again, and again, and again... etc.

Don't listen to those with no expertise.
It's not your antivirus.

Please explain how the problem is caused then?

Evidence?
Also, why doesn't it happen to Avast or AVG users?

That get's you working again but it does not prevent messages getting
stuck in the Outbox.

Why are you trying to suppress advice that could help other users
avoid the problem in the first place?

OK mood! Cool it. I didn't mean to offend your experties! I was mearly
stating that I didn't think it was the problem because I've been using it for
months. I'll give it a try and see if it works, just a shame that I paid for
Norton and I can't use it.

Get a refund.
Norton may try to put you off but persist and you will
succeed since they are well aware of the problem of
some of their products not being fully compatible
with Vista.

We get quite a few reports here from people who've used
Windows Mail successfully for several months, then boom!
Suddenly it quits working. After uninstalling Norton or McAfee,
Windows Mail begins working again.

Like Julian says, get a refund from Symantec. That's what I did
after buying my last copy of NAV in 2003.

How can I remove windows mail problem no 3 from my PC? I have sufficient
disk space and I think my memory space is ok too. This is a new PC so I do
not know how to delete the received message which cannot be displayed?

Use the Microsoft fix:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090
"Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a
computer that is running Windows Vista"

That page offers two download options. Unless you know for sure
you have 64-bit Vista, use the 32-bit option.

Also, although only the outbox is mentioned, it works for all stuck
emails regardless of which folder they are in.

Gary,

If I remove McAfee, will my email program work normally again? It's making
me mad cuz I spent $80.00 on McAfee for the year and never had any problems
with it before. I recently got a new PC with Vista installed and Windows
Mail as well. Before I had Outlook Express with Windows XP and I subscribed
to McAfee. I never had any problems like I'm having now.

Any other suggestions???

Thanks...

I don't see where you described the problems you are having with
Windows Mail. Without a description of those problems, I can't be
sure that McAfee is causing them. To be sure, Windows Mail is
not compatible with McAfee. You could do a trial uninstall of McAfee.
If that doesn't resolve your Windows Mail problems then reinstall
McAfee if you want.
