This should only happen when you go to the Microsoft Communities newsgroups.

Go to Tools | Accounts and select Microsoft Communities. Click Properties
and go to the Windows Live ID tab. Select the option you want.

A suggestion:

Try right-clicking on "Microsoft communities" in the left pane, and
selecting "Properties", then the "Windows live ID" tag at the top.

Try clicking on the "Never use Community features that require Windows Live
ID", then OK.

THANK YOU! I have the exact same problem (in fact, I posted about it over
the weekend, but the messages - several Vista bugs this weekend including
complete loss of the ability to get admin rights - never showed up. I
suspected the Windows Live process for that, too. Guess I'll find out if
this message appears.

I was really optimistic Vista would be good, but some of these bugs I am
getting...jeez, it's like a paper that hasn't been proofread.

Thanks for the reply. I am never too sure where the errors are, and in this
case it could be something other than Vista. At least there is a way to turn
it off in Vista. (and it took me a while to find it too!)

I'm not one of those 'google to find the answer' people. Sometimes that
works, but for other occasions there are these usenet help groups. If I came
over as cynical, I apologise. I hope my suggestion worked out for you.

hi john. the suggestion worked very well.
i'm not the google kind either. but i must admit that after exploring on my
own and then looking at the help contents, the next thing i do is google up
for answers.
its just that i was so overwhelmed with the new things in vista that i kept
hopping from one to other wihout studying any fully. result!?...i messed up
with my wmp11. now it keeps on playing a machine gun firing sound no matter
which song i play. and this same wmp11 works fine on my brother's user
account!

I did see your other message about the problems with WMP. I don't have that
problem, but I have seen messages from others about crackling sounds when
using a creative sound card, and you might have some success if you search
for 'crackling' in google groups.

like this for instance:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...ling+vista+sound+card&rnum=1#2cd221aa73f4223f

I think the crackling sound problem predated Vista, but it seems to have
returned. I have a Creative Audigy 2 card, but I don't have that particular
issue, so I suspect it is one of those things that is hard to track down.
