Windows Mail email downloading -- not!

I just got a Windows Vista computer, which has Windows Mail instead of
Outlook Express. However, they are similar. I wanted to download mail from my
POP3 server (gmail), and it did so as far as 7/4/07, then mysteriously jumped
over hundreds of messsages until today's date, and downloaded those. Even
since then, it seems to selectively download about half the messages which
have come today (I am double-checking at the Gmail site until this gets
straightened out).
By the way -- I also HATE Vista.

Sounds like a server problem, or a 3rd party application like a virus
scanner interfering.

If you hate it why do you use it?

I agree that it must be a server side problem, unless you have the mail
program set to only retrieve mail every few days instead of hours.

I'm sure Vista came on the new machine, because XP is not an option on most
new machines.
I have put off upgrading because most vendors are offering XP on a very
limited set of machines.
If MS ever reworks Vista to make it less AOL/Fisher-Price, I may consider
it.
But I bought several XP Pro OEM CDs for the machines I know I will have to
replace in the next year or so.
I may have to build the machines to get what I want, but they won't be
Vista!

This is almost all the time caused by you Anti Virus integration (email scanning). Norton or Mcaffe by any chance.

Disable the email integration of your AV . You might need to uninstall it and then re-install without the email integration.

Avast is a very god AV program and it works very well with WM. DO NOT set the email scanning option when installing.
