When I properly shut down Windows mail (File > Close) the next time I start
the program I get an error message "Windows Mail did not shutdown correctly
The last time you ran Windows Mail it did not exit correctly. In case this
was due to a problem with the last message you were viewing, the message is
not being shown."

How can I fix this? I have been running Windows Mail with Vista for many
months with no problem until now.

That type of problem can be caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?

The problem occured several days in a row. Shutting down the computer
overnight did not help.

I'm running Trend Micro AntiVirus - the same virus program that I have been
using ever since I began using Vista. No problem until now.

Trend Micro antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes an update to trigger the beginning of symptoms.
First, go into its settings and disable any interaction with email, then try
Windows Mail again. If no improvement, do a trial uninstall of the antivirus.

Another option (instead of uninstalling Trend Micro) is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of
overly intrusive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

In any case you must disable any antivirus email scanning, for the reason
explained here:
