Most versions of the Norton antivirus program are known to eventually
corrupt the Windows Mail database, although slowly enough that this
does not immediately become obvious. Which version do you have?
Note that just disabling this antivirus program is seldom enough to fix
the problems it causes. Instead, you usually need to uninstall the Norton
program, then reboot, then run this cleanup program to finish what the
uninstall should have done:

Installing another antivirus program from Norton, Symantec, McAfee, or
Trend is not a good idea unless you want to see them cause similar problems.
Instead, you may want one of these, which don't cause such problems:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe

The free version of either of them should be good enough.

Note that having more than one antivirus program installed on your
machine at the same time is not a good idea; they tend to interfere
with each other. However, if you want protection from spyware,
which many antivirus programs don't even try to handle, most
antispyware programs don't interfere with each other. I use the
following three (free versions of each):

<http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx>

Also, if an antivirus program identifies a virus or some spyware
but the free version refuses to remove it, you may find this program
useful:

I just saw you message and posted my own. I have the same problem. It's one
thing after another with Vista. I don't use Norton, so I doubt that's
causing our problem.

Don't blame Norton. Norton was never on my PC and myself and a friend have
the same problem. She uses AVG and I use AVIRA. She never used Norton
either.

I don't use Norton and never did and have the same problem with Windows
Mail. Also, WMail somehow "loses" my username and passwords" for my NSPs.
How is this fixed when you never had Norton on a Vista machine?

Norton security products are among the top three troublemakers
for Windows Mail. Symptoms often don't surface until several months have
gone by, or until an update occurs.
First, be sure to disable its email scanning, for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Several users here have reported that Symantec will give you a free
upgrade to Norton Antivirus 2009, which cures the problem. If interested,
contact Symantec via online chat.

Disabling the Norton program is often insufficient. Do a trial uninstall,
followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Alternatively, instead of uninstalling your antivirus, another option is to
upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse
effects of overly intrusive antivirus products:

Most Windows computers come with a trial version of Norton or
McAfee antivirus. Are you sure yours came with neither?

I never saw Norton on this machine. If it came with it it must be an
invisible version (only kidding) or removed before the tech left that day.
It's always had Avira. There's noting in the register related to Samantic
(sp?) or Norton.

Will, please post any additional comments in your own thread.
Hijacking benick's thread will only confuse matters, since he does
have Norton antivirus. Don't jump to conclusions about what
problems Norton does or does not cause.

I don't think you can disable DEP for WM.
