Windows Mail and Hotmail alternatives???

Hi, I am setting up my new laptop and is running on Vista. I have used Mac
OSX for the last 4 years so I'm still catching up with Vista.
What I need to know is what can I do to set up an email account which will
work in Windows Mail, the program on my laptop.
Currently I have a hotmail email account, and as I've seen, it isn't
supported by Windows Mail. I am willing to stop using my hotmail account and
begin a new email account with somebody else which would work with Windows
Mail. But I have not the slightest clue where I can get an email account
which will work with Windows Mail.
I'm really confused with all the stuff others are saying in other threads =S
All I want is to be able to use the Windows Mail program to send and receive
mail from friends etc.
Help really appreciated!

As an alternative to Hotmail - which I don't think any Vista users can get
- you might want to go with your internet provider's own Email. Your account
is probably set up already.
Microsoft will want a few particulars from your server to run their
account through Windows Mail.
Once set up it becomes a one click deal - yes; my mouse is set for one
instead of two clicks; I'm lazy. No more address or password to enter ever.
Hopefully your provider will not bombard you with popups and flashing
ads like the other guys.
Mine doesn't have ads and they never forget my address and password!

Email doesn't get better than that. Try it. You'll love it.

Alternatives to Hotmail that works on Windows Mail are Yahoo email, and
gmail. However, Microsoft plans to enable users to use Hotmail with their
email clients in time. See below.

"It’s been a long time in the making and we're confident that you'll love
Windows Live Hotmail. Not only have we developed a service that is fast,
safe and simple to use, but we're also giving users access to their mail any
way they want it. That's right. In the coming weeks, anyone who is using
Microsoft Outlook 2003 (or later) will have free access to their Windows
Live Hotmail account via Outlook. This isn't just your average POP mail...
you can synchronize your mail, folders, safe/unsafe sender lists, AND
contacts on your computer and on the web! Stay tuned for instructions on
how to download the Outlook Connector. For consumers out there who don't
use Outlook, in the coming weeks, we'll be providing free access to a great
new consumer client mail service that will connect with any POP, IMAP and of
course Windows Live Hotmail account."

Anyone out there considering downloading "Outlook Connector" - whatever
that is - should remember URGE and QuiickTime. If you download this latest
gimmick it's probably for life. I like Windows Mail the way it is.

Gmail scans all your email (the whole content included). To make targeted
advertisements. Gmail is not free (imho).
However, they are still "less annoying" than most live.com ads.

Gmail's ads are only visible on their website.
If you use their POP mail option (as I do) you'll never see any ads.
Incidentally, the current build of Windows Live Mail has no ads either.
