I am trying, without success, to set up my Windows Mail account. I am a fios
customer with Verizon but use aol as my primary email account. I have
successfully set up the account (miraculously!) to receive mail but CAN NOT
send. I've tried several different configurations based on other posts here.
Can you please give me, idiot proof, step by step directions about how to
complete this frustrating task?

Thank you!

Presumably you get an error message when you try to send? If so,
right-click on the error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without that complete error message.

Here is the message:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'Read: status /
update / appraisal', Account: 'imap.aol.com', Server: 'smtp.aol.com',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '556 CLIENT AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED. USE
ESMTP EHLO AND AUTH.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 556, Error
Number: 0x800CCC78

Aol is not a POP3 so you have to pick imap from the drop down menu and then
type in imap.aol.com in the receive box. Obviously, I can't help with the
send box.

At least two of your settings are wrong (SMTP port # and SMTP-AUTH).
Use these instructions:

Whoo-hoo! I just figured it out! You were right, aol required a different
port number. I changed that to the correct one and, miraculously, it is
working!!!!! Thanks again!

Glad to have helped.
It really isn't miraculous, just a matter of following the published instructions.
