can anyone advise me why windows sporadically logs off - sometimes
immediately/sometimes after as much as 3 hours - often opening several copies
of calculator prior to doing so.

Hi Mark,

I would suggest you start by doing a virus scan with up to date virus
software, then scan for and removing any installed spyware.
If you are in need of virus software, here are a couple to choose
from, for free.
Download the software, and in Update Manager run Update
then do a complete virus scan.
Free Offer: eTrust EZ Armor Security Suite from Computer Associates
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm

Grisoft Freeweb: AVG Free Edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/

Search and destroy Parasites/SpyWare/Malware/Adware:
Ad-aware is a free multi spyware removal utility that scans
your memory, registry and hard drives for known spyware
components and lets you remove them safely. After installing
Ad-Aware make sure to run the update feature before scanning.
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ For large amounts of installed
spyware and such, it may be necessary to run Ad-Aware several
times to clear them all.

Here are a couple more removal tools that should also be run.
CWShredder: http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php#cwshred

Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/

SpywareBlaster:
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html
SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it
prevents it from ever being installed. SpywareBlaster is
a non memory resident utility. It works by setting a "kill bit"
for the CLSIDs of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the
installation of any of them from a webpage.

Hi Bert

Thanks for your prompt reply
I have already run Mcafee virus scans (found several copies of netsky which
I deleted - computer seemed ok for 10 days or so - then problem reappeared),
spyware, adware, trend micro on line scan etc. I have now done a format
rescue and the problem seems worse than ever. Windows will now not stay on
for long enough to try any of your suggestions - either in normal or safe
mode.

Grateful for any suggestions
Regards
Mark

Hi Mark,

When you say the system "logs off", does it end up at the Welcome
Screen?

Please explain exactly what's happening and if there are any error
messages post them word for word.

Hi Bert

I have just followed advise from Ramesh re 'copy userinit...' etc - xp seems
to be remaining on. When it shuts down - i get the message 'logging off' and
the system appears to perform a normal shutdown and then switch off. I have
just performed another macafee scan and found nothing - i will now attempt to
follow the remainder of your advice.

Mark

Hi Bert

Computer has stayed on for approx 40 hours without shutting
down.........until now. Same problem - system says 'logging off' and is
followed by 'windows is shutting down' - after which machine shuts down.
Whilst the machine was running, I have followed all your advice re virus
scans and spyware scans with no viruses found. I have also run a trend micro
housecall on-line virus scan - nothing found.

Any further suggestions?
Regards
Mark
