Windows login failure

When I boot up my system, the windows xp is loading comes up, goes
through its processes, and then no login screen comes up. Just a black
screen with a mouse pointer that I can move around. I've seen other
people have this problem on google groups with no definitive answer of
what causes it or how to fix it. I'm quite sure mine has been caused by
malware.
Anyway, this is what I have attempted so far:
- Start in safe mode....no luck
- Last known good....no luck
- Repair windows installation by booting with windows cd (might mention
now that i need data on the hard drive)
- Installed windows on my second hard drive... That copy works fine
(now using it) but can't access any of the data under the USER account
of my other installation, which is where the data i need is (ie My
Documents).

So...if anyone can help me with:
- The initial login problem; or
- Getting access to the data through my currently installed copy of xp

that would be much appreciated.
Cheers.
