Windows Live Mail Desktop: 0x800CCC7D Error

I've installed Windows Live Mail Desktop (WLMD), and configured it to take
over my gmail account.

WLMD receives my gmail mail alright, but won't send anything.

"The server won't accept the SSL connexion. Server eror 250
ENCHANCEDSTATUSCODES.
Windows live mail error: 0x800CCC7D".

a) what do I need to do?
b) how do I do it? As the menu on WLMD is very succinct, and I am fairly
illiterate when it comes to these things...
