Windows keeps sending device disconnect message

We have Windows 2000/SR-4, Dell Inspiron 5000 (yes an
older model) with USB 1.0

There are 4 devices connected to the USB port, Toshiba
Cable modem, mini optical mouse, Brother Multifunction
printer/copier & Kodak camera.

Lately and it just may be when the 4th device was
attached.. throughout the day, when logging off AOL, etc.
suddenly the message that a device is being unplugged pops
up regardless of whether the box is uncheck at the time,
and it freezes the computer.

I just added a PCMCIA USB 2 card and high speed USB hub.
This did not help the problem.

Are there any suggestions here ?

Thanks

Hi

you don't say if it is always the same device which is thought to be unplugged. If it is, have you tried swapping the cables around to see if there is a poor connection?

I think its the Toshiba cable modem which is USB.

I did swap, and actually when I added the PCMCIA card with
2 slots - I put the Cable modem cable in the 1st slot and
the hub into the 2nd - no change.

Maybe I will just try a Network card and change over from
the USB connection.
