Windows Intataller 3.1 Issue?

My XP Pro system is configured with one administrator account and two limited
user accounts. For security purposes the Administrator account is the only
accout I use to install programs. We use the limited acconts for our daily
use.

After installing Adobe Acrobat 7.0.8, I got the dreaded "Microsoft
Installer" box with "Preparing to install Acrobat 7.0.8" pop up every time I
logged onto one of the limited user accounts. This phenomenon did not occur
when I logged on as administrator. If I raised the Limited User to
administrator level all was well; but that defeats the purpose of a limited
user.

I tried the Installer clean-up tool and subsequently reloaded Acrobat to no
avail.

Upon further investigation I found the following logged in the events log
after logging on to a limited user account:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001
Date: 10/1/2006

This lead me to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT keys. ALL the keys that get installed
had to be edited to allow USERS permission (A very laborious, risky task I
might add). For some reason Windows Installer adds the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
registry keys with SYSTEM and ADMINISTRATOR permissions only. When Windows
does an "on demand" install from a user account and these registry keys do
not allow USERS permission. The install fails (as indicated by the constant
attempt to re-install) You will, then, get this pair of events logged.

After going through all of this the execution from the limited user accounts
is still not correct (eg. the PDFMaker Tool Bar add-in for Office is not
available if the user has limited rights but is available if that user is
raised to Administrator rights)

My first inclination was to go to Adobe for the answer; however, when I
tried to install Norton Ghost 10.0 today, I had the same issue. Obviously
something wrong on my machine...But what????

Sorry for the vebose post; but this is my feeble attempt to preempt multiple
posts as we work down this one.

Thanks In advance,
Mike

Installer clean-up utility is dated 2003,its hardly going to run in 2006..
Try going to run, type:services.msc In msc scroll to windows installer, double
click,in properties,select auto run,from manual start,close out msc.

Thanks for the quick reply; however your suggestion did not resolve the
problem even after uninstalling and re-installing the Acrobat product. The
issue still appears to be one of permissions; in that, when the limited user
is raised to Administrator status all is well. And given the work on the
registry, I'm led to believe the permission problem is in the registry.

I'm still looking for an answer. There must be some policy or installer
command going awry. I was able to load some older software (EPSON R220
Printer Support Package) without these problems.

Thanks again

Robert:

I have yet to figure this one out; though, with a bit more "hacking" I may
be successful<G>

I am not ready to pin this on onto third party software vendors (HP, Adobe,
Symantec, etc.) ....yet! Installing Adobe Acrobat 7.0 and Symantec Ghost
10.0 yeilded the same pop up installer messages. I have been able to get rid
of the pop-ups from the Acrobat install via some extensive registry editing.
(Not recommended for the faint of heart...I keep a backup registry and Hard
Drive image just in case I make a mistake). As I posted earlier in this
thread, the registry changes required to get rid of these pop-ups basically
required giving USERS permission to all of the Acrobat entries. I would have
thought Installer would have taken care of that. I have also loaded some
older printer software from HP without incident; so, i'm leaning toward an
installer and/or group policies issue now rather than the third party
vendors. I have successfully installed programs on this machine in the past
without a hitch; but it seems since the update to Installer 3.1 the problems
have started (I have Windows auto-update turned on so I cannot say that that
is the problem)

I was kind of hoping to hear from one of the Microsoft MVP's on this forum
as to where in the group policies or the registry or installer I might start
looking.

BTW: Are you logging on from a "standard" user account? If you are, log
onto an administrator account, go to the control panel, select the properties
for your user account, then change your user account to Administrator
privileges. Restart your machine. If the pop-ups go away, you are having
the same problemas I am.

You need to determine the name of the application which's being reinstall/repaired. If the application name can't be determined, check the Event logs. For more information, check the following article:
