windows installer

I am trying to install additional software onto my
computer which is running windows 2000 and it will not
recognize the software to install it - "autorun" works but
not the installation process - nothing.

If I upgrade to windows xp pro will that correct the
problem or do I need to reinstall the operating system(win
2000)?

Reinstall service pack 4, this happened to me the other
day with one of my clients and that fixed the issue.
