windows installer xp service pack 2

I have just one question, I can't get windows installer to work properly, the
error message I receive is: "The patch could not be opened. Verify that the
patch package exist and that you can access it."

I have tried every remedy for this error message: finding the latest version
of Windows Installer, downloading service pack 2 and installing it. Nothing
works, does anyone have an Ideal to resolve this problem? I have owned
office 2003 for 4 years and would like to continue to get some use.

However windows update usually supplies installer 3.1 to install,what
happens
with update....Also,once this or the latest version gets installed,go to
run,type:
services.msc In msc,scroll to installer,double click,in properties,change
from
manual start to auto start,start service,close out msc.Also,installer v3.1
is not
included in xp SP2,nor does SP2 need to be installed to install v3.1
