Windows Installer won't stay started.

In trying to update my ISP software I worked with their Help Desk and
it came to light that the Windows Installer was stopped and in manual
mode (This seems strange since I've used it often for close to 2 years
without having to start it.)

So I set it to automatic and rebooted, same problem still there.
Skipping a few steps it turns out that I can start it, but after about
5-10 seconds it goes to stopped.

I've browsed a number of threads here on this topic and have some 'try
this' ideas, but I'm a risk-adverse novice and this is my first foray
into MS code problems.

Any ideas? Please be gentle. TIA

Thanks for your response.

I opened 94 and got a succesfully applied msg from Registry Editor,
restarted, but Windows Installer still won't stay started. It seems to
stay started a few more seconds then before, but still goes to
stopped.

Anybody else want to take a shot at this before I go to MS. I'm really in a
ditch here. TIA.

I think the problem with Installer is that I have a worm -- W32.Gibe.B
which, from what i have read, messes around when you try to update the
registry, which is what Carey's fix does.

I subscribed to Norton 2004 AV, but it won't successfully install. The
pre-install scanner deletes a lot of things, but leaves
C:\WINDOWS\DX3DRndr.exe is infected with W32.Gibe.B@mm. (REMAINS).

I can't find a Symantec XP group. Does anyone have any suggestions or has
succesfully rid themselves of this. From what I have rid it looks like I
might have to do a restore which I have never done and I've heard can be
hairy.

I will get in touch with their helpdesk. Perhaps another group would be a
better place to take this. TIA

Thanks.

This link downloaded a fix tool, which ran, finished and gave me a a
"... has not been found" msg. I re-booted, ran the NAV 2004
pre-install scanner and W32.Gibe was still there. -(

I'll read through Carey's manual fix method and to see if I can work
my way through that. I also downloaded Noaddware and will try that. I
have an old copy of Spybot search and destroy (that doesn't find it),
but don't know how to update it.
Any other free AV's out there anyone would recommend?
Also, how do you post with a fake email address? I use Google and OL
Express.

TIA

Here are some manual removal instructions that might help..

The preferred way to remove this worm is to use the W32.Gibe@mm
Removal Tool. If for any reason you cannot obtain the tool, you must
remove the worm manually.

To remove this worm:
1.. Update your virus definitions.
2.. Restart the computer in Safe mode.
3.. Run a full system scan and delete files that are detected as
W32.Gibe@mm, and then delete the 02_N803.dat file.
4.. Remove the key and values that the worm added to the registry.

NOTE: Windows Me and Windows XP users should turn off System Restore.
This feature, which is enabled by default, is used by Windows Me/XP to
restore files on your computer in case they become damaged. When a
computer is infected with a virus, it is possible that the virus could
be backed up by System Restore. By default, Windows prevents System
Restore from being modified by outside programs. As a result, there is
the possibility that you could accidentally restore a virus-infected
file, or that on-line scanners would detect the virus in that
location.

Thanks, tried this manual procedure and I still have the same problem.
Since neither this nor the automatic Wininstaller fix you pointed me
to have worked I'm wondering if I have a problem with my environment.
I think I am logged on in normal mode with administrator priviledges.
Is there a way to check to be sure that is actually the situation?

TIA
