"Windows Installer/This installation package could not be opened ... you can access"

It seems to me that I have severe permission problems, which I never had
before. My guess is that it has to do with access permission to executables
associated with InstallShield. I have gone to their site, and found that
their screen shots for setting permissions do not match my WinXP Pro
screens. I have no SECURITY tab, just a SHARING tab with wording that tells
me that options are grayed out because the System has exclusive access, or
words to that effect. I have not found a way to get in touch with
InstallShield. Their site says to contact the aplication manufacturer. With
respect to Microsoft, Symantec, Roxio, etc., this is either not possible for
me to do directly or pretty expensive. If I could use true e-mail, via
Outlook Express for example, I could send InstallShield my screen shots and
ask them how to proceed. However, their website makes clear to me that they
have chosen to NOT interact with end users.

There are several applications that I can neither install, nor uninstall via
Control Panel. I keep getting the Windows Installer error window. I am
afraid that I am going to have to pay some significant $$$ to get this
problem solved. And more afraid that I may have to pay the $$$ and still get
no solution.

Please tell me how I may make some progress toward a solution, preferably at
reasonable cost.

To see the security tab in XP Pro go to control panel..folder options..view
tab and scroll down to use simple file sharing and uncheck it. You should be
able to see the security tab then.
