Hi all
My os is xp pro. I have had office 2k on my system for years and now I can
not open half of the programs. Outlook and publisher open fine, when Excel
opens a small window saying "preparing to install" comes up and then goes
away and excel loads. Word, PP, and Access all do the same thing, They try
to load, the window that says "preparing to install" comes up, (which never
used to be there opening any program) it is replaced by an error window that
in its caption says "problem with shortcut" and in the box it says: "This
patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and
that you can access it, or contact the application vender to verify that this
is a valid windows installer patch package." Thinking a re-install of the
office program might fix it I got the same error window with a different
caption, that being "Windows Installer"! So I can not even re-install the
program, and the cd drive works on all other programs. At one time I got
another "windows Installer" error. In that one it said something (sorry)
about windows installer error 1635. I hope some one can make some sense out
of this, I have tried to give as much information as I can. I just hope it
is presented such that it might be understood.

PS I just found that I can open all programs via "New office Document"!!!

Thanks for any help at all...

Try going to run, type:services.msc In msc scroll down to windows installer,
double click on it,in the new properties window,in the scroll bar change from
manual to automatic, then start the service, close out.

Andrew E. Thank you for the post

Bad news. Your instructions were very well put but did not solve the
problem. Found some other solutions but they entailed working in the
registry, which I think I can do with good instructions, but they also
included deleting and reinstalling a program called Plus! Have not a clue
what that is and I have no way of reinstalling unless I can down load it from
the net. Any thoughts???
