Windows installation??

I bought a laptop on auction. Seller said it had a license for windows vista
home, but hard drive is wiped clean and no recovery discs were included. On
bottom of computer is windows sticker with product key. Seller said I could
install any version of windows I have, and just enter the license I have to
activate it. I planned on installing a copy of xp pro I have, then using the
product code on the bottom of the laptop when I go to activate program, Will
this work??
