Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service Will not Start

I have a laptop (Dell Inspiron 8600) on which WIA will not start. I tried to
start it as a service and tried as a program, but nothing works. Without WIA
Service started, the laptop does not see my Digital Camera (Canon PowerShot
A80). Canon told me to Dell and Dell told me to talk to Microsoft. Any
ideas?

Well, this is a pain. I just tried it and you are correct.
Now, how did I get there? I can't tell you exactly.
I went to the Canon site, then Support, then search for A80 and did get
something like Frequently Asked Questions about problems. It did give
directions about problems about WIA and how to solve them so I copied the
URL and included it in my message. However, apparently, you can only get to
it by going to the Canon site first.
Here is the Canon site, from there go to support.

If this does not open, use internet search for canon.

I can't get to that site. It times out. I get the following message:"Your
request has been timed out because the system is congested and your request
was received several times. Please return to the main menu, and try again."

Yes, I've been to that area of the Canon Website, but it doesn't address the
WIA Service not starting. Thanks.

Go to the Canon web site.
Click on Products, Consumer products and enter A80 in the search box and
click on the Search button.
A window will open, look into it for Canon consumer products, support,
Powershot A80-Frequently asked questions. Click on this.
A window will open, click on Search by category and then click on
Difficulties when connecting to a computer, then on precautions when
connecting to windows XP. Find your answers there.

Thanks for all your help. The Canon FAQ's are interesting, but not of much
use for my problem. However I was reading about WIA on Microsoft.com and one
of the articles was discussing WIA problems with old device drivers. This
usually leads to a slow-booting system and image device problems. This
Laptop was once connected to a PhotoSmart 2700 printer (which showed up as an
imaging device in Device Manager). I disable the printer and rebooted the
system and, lo and behold, WIA started, and my camera was detected and I
could upload all my pictures. I am a happy camper!! Thanks for all your
help, Yves!!!
