windows icon does not show up

I have a hp laptop that when starting up with winxp the icon has
disappeared? It was there yesterday and now its gone?? what happened? what
can I do to resolve this?

icons set to show up on my desktop when I start up and now they do not? Like

1. What changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?
If you can identify the change, reverse it.

2. Right-click on an empty area of the Desktop and from the context menu
(in the Icons category) make sure "show Desktop icons" is checked. You
may have inadvertently unchecked it.

3. If #1 or #2 don't help/aren't applicable, try a System Restore to
when things worked.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore - "Restore my
computer to an earlier time"

4. If none of the above works, your user profile may be corrupt or your
computer may be infected.

Try #1-3 and if you need more help, post back with some details about
your system, your security programs, etc.
