windows host process (rundll32) has stopped working

Hi - I have installed windows vista business a while ago and up to now have
not had any problems however I installed a tv Flydvb-T-Hybrid card which
functions perfectly and recorded an mpeg file with no problems from the AV
input from a camcorder.

However when I try to move or open the mpeg file with windows explorer I get
the "windows host process (rundll32) has stopped working" message?

The wierd thing is that I can open and watch the mpeg file with media player
etc with no problems but windows explorer gives the error message everytime
it lets me get so far then I get the message? I am pretty knowledgable with
pcs and experience tells me its a vista bug not a hardware bug, but someone
may have hopefully resolved it? Or do we have to wait for microsoft to dish
out a bug fix?

Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated?

What does the Event Log have as an error message?

Hope this helps? I can verify that the issue on my pc is purely the
interaction between Windows Explorer and MPEG files, I havn't had the issue
with any other file types yet?

Further to my last message: I have a laptop with XP Pro installed and I
connected to my pc via wifi and I was able to rename, move etc the MPEG file
with no problems at all? I am convinced that the issue is a bug with windows
explorer in vista when handling certain files?

I see nothing in the Event Log that indicates anything to pin point a
problem.

Is this card you installed Flydvb-T-Hybrid and its driver 100% Vista
compatible?

Are you in compliance with Vista?

I don't think it's a Vista bug per say, but rather it may be what you're
using is not Vista compliant that's causing your problems. It may be working
when using a mpeg file since the driver for whatever media solution is using
the file, but it may not apply when the O/S is moving/copying the file.

I just created some mpg tv recordings and move the files with no problems.

Hi Mr Arnold and thank you for taking the time and trouble to look at my
problem

The driver is vista compatible as I downloaded it from the manufacturers
website before I installed the card. I ran the vista upgrade advisor to scan
for compatibility issues and although it found a couple of issues with sound
and a partition program it did not identify the card or driver, I updated the
sound and removed the problem program but it did not solve the problem.

maybe its an issue with certain types of files i.e MPEG1 or MPEG2 or how
they are saved on the system such as PAL VCD or SVCD etc.

When I get the error messages the tv card program is not running i.e I could
just be browsing folders with no problems at all but only have to highlight a
folder containing the movie clip and the error message starts which would
then close all explorer windows that are open. The only clash is windows
explorer any other program has no problem handling the movie files and their
folders

I suppose I'll have to keep using the laptop with XP installed to work on
movie files in my PC until I get to the bottom of it or hopefully a vista
update may solve the problem, if not I may try a different TV card but it is
certainly a funny issue and from other postings on the web it seems to be a
problem for a lot of people?

Have you reported this crash to Microsoft? I don't see any results for that
crash data at this time. Do you have a bucket number in the Problem Reports
and Solutions center for this error? Those are generally very useful and
may provide better data.

Given your circumstances, I would speculate that you have a third party MPEG
decoder on your system that is not functioning correctly. If you turn off
thumbnail views in Explorer (or switch to List or Details view), does this
still crash?

Given a fault bucket number, it might be possible to identify the offending
decoder. Alternatively, anybody could look at the DMP file that would be
generated by this crash and then debug through that to determine the
crashing binary.
