I recently moved to a locale where I had to go back to dial up. When I
set it up, that's when the hangs started. I am not sure if the dial up
client is the problem, but before I implemented it, my system was
smooth as a baby's.....

I disabled McAfee, zone alarm and everything else. System will run for
a while, sometimes hours, unless I am trying to do a lot of opening
and closing applications...and then hangs as if 100% of the cpu cycles
are being taken up by something. I run Agent as a newsreader and
Eudora...sometimes one or the other hangs...not consistent.

Can't even figure out how to diagnose what the problem really is. Any
pointers???>

Thanks

First thing to check is your cooling fans. Does it appear to hang after many
applications are opened?

Fan monitors give way bogus high speeds...didn't use to...but fans are
running OK. Took case cover off and fans throttled back...the variable
fan...and the temperatures started to drop...cpu ~50C and MB ~40C. The
HDs...at least the bottom one...is almost too hot to keep the fingers
on. Had that problem before. With case cover off it cools off some.
Put in new "cable" connectors to replace ribbons to get better
circulation inside case...doesn't seem to have made any difference.

You seem to suggest heat as the culprit...and it could be the master
HD is getting set to fail...running too hot and not "working" as
required. The case seems to put HDs way too tightly together. Maybe I
need to pop for one large drive and do away with the second one to
open things up a bit.

Still, could heat be instigating the hangs to the system??
