Windows hanging after OE loads

Hi

I am having an unusual problem on XP Home SP2. The 1st time I load
Outlook Express after booting up, after closing it down the system
hangs and nothing will open (firing up shortcuts does not even seem to
invoke any activity on the "processes" page of the Task Manager. This
can eventually right itself after several minutes, then everything
opens at once. The only workaround I have been able to discover is that
if I plug then unplug my USB2.0 flash card reader into a USB socket,
this seems to prompt the system to wake up.

Any ideas??

BTW system is an Athlon XP2500+ on an AsRock MB in a cheap case and
power supply

Many thanks

Thanks for the reply, Gerry.

Unfortunately, I still have the problem after moving everything out of
the inbox. The problem seems to occur only after I close down OE and,
once it sorts itself out, disappears until the next time I reboot the
PC (I can open and close OE without any problem). Does anyone know if
this may be a hardware problem related to the M/b and /or the USB
ports/drivers?

Close Outlook Express.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced
Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and
folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files
" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second
item. You should also make certain that the box before "Hide
extensions for known file types" is not checked.

Enter Windows Explorer. Search My Computer with "inbo*.dbx"
without quotes as the search criteria and see if you can find more than
one folder. Note the date / time stamp on the files. An original inbox will
appear as inbox. dbx. The next as inbox (01) dbx, then inbox (02) dbx
etc. The file extension can also appear as .dbt i.e. a temporary folder.

Delete the inbox.dbx and all inbox variants.

Restart Outlook Express. Place the cursor on Outlook Express in the
Folder List, select File, Work Offline and then File, Folder, Compact All.

Does that give you a better result?

Hope this helps.
