Windows Genuine Advantage Validation

Hello,

I am hoping someone can shed some light on WTF is going on. I purchased a
Dell computer about 4 months ago. Little did I know, Dell does not include
the backup disks anymore - they want you to make them backup disks after you
receive the computer. Well, I didn't like this idea and I contacted Dell -
they sent me the disks. The Win XP Pro disk clearly states "For distribution
only with a new PC".....this is a genuine CD, no doubt. The key was affixed
and everything. I wiped the drive to get rid of all the little BS stuff Dell
adds - re-loaded Win XP Pro. No problems until I go and get updates -
Microsoft says the CD key is not valid.

What gives? Trying to get Dell on the phone is like tyring to get away with
murder - not going to happen.

Any help/ideas?

Thanks in advance!

You need to get through to Dell. In the meantime, open IE.
Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Add ons. Disable WGA. Close IE for it to
take effect. Go back to the updates and ignore the bubble that pops up
telling you did what you just did and you'll be allowed to download updates.

Groovy, ain't it, how MS' little you are a thief until you prove you're
innocent programs only inconvenience the paying customer while the
pirates just crack away and laugh?

What key was used? The one that came with the computer and
stuck on the case or the key that came with the cdrom?

Why, what are they going to do, give him another Dell OEM key that the
stupid validation junk is going to reject? The problem lies with flaws
in WGA, not the OEM. They're just going to tell him to call Microsoft
and pay $30+ for an M$ tech support call that still won't solve anything.

OK, I called Dell with the number provided - they say it's not their problem.
They say the disk is VALID. All I want is a little help.....

Anyone?

Charlie

This happens in US and Canadian call centres.. call centres get paid on
calls handled, and not the quality of resolution.. it is the interest of ALL
call centres that customers make more than one call re a problem..

Call Dell and ask them if the "Product Key" you
used with their Dell reinstallation CD is valid.

Oh yes I'm sure that's true, I was merely speculating on the lack of
restroom breaks, perhaps by the end of the shift the techs are having
trouble concentrating :)

I would imagine that key could be the source of many a pirate copy, perhaps
if there is a different one on the machine itself that you can try it would
work?

Restroom breaks would appear to be a bone of contention in other countries
too.. I do believe that the practice was started on home shores before being
exported..

And what do you think they're going to say? You don't get it, do you?
Dell isn't going to help anymore than Micro$lop will. If the "Product
Key" worked for installation and activation but failed validation, who's
fault is that? Micro$lop's, that's who. The validation system is
terribly flawed. But being an M$ brrown-noser you can't admit that any
more than you can admit when you're wrong, which, BTW, is damn frequent.

Call God and ask Him if the braincell that came up with this stupid
answer of yours is valid.

OK, I called Dell tech again - they said the product number included with the
CD-ROM is VALID - otherwise Win XP Pro wouldn't have loaded with the product
key. I have two keys - onle on the side of the CPU (just like a normal Dell
set-up) and the product ket that came with the DEll XP Pro disk/manual.

MS sure is getting snealy - I didn't know I was downloading the "genuine
advantage installation tool" until it was already downloaded and installed.
Shame on MS.

This is pure crap. No help from Dell and no help from MS.

How about it, Carey? You gonna help me now?

That's right.

Be careful what you download. You had to agree to it at some point.

Yup. That's what I said would happen.

LOL! What's that stupid moron gonna do to help you? He'll probably just
tell you to go out and buy a full retail version of XP.

Do what Alias said to disable WGA in IE and get the updates anyway.

Sorry you fell victim to the all too common M$ and Dell crap.

Launch Internet Explorer and from the Toolbar select:
Tools > Internet Options > General > Settings... >
View Objects. Look for "WUWebControl Class",
right-click on it and select "Remove".

To verify whether your copy of Windows is legal, follow these steps:

1. On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
2. On the Help menu, click "Is this copy of Windows legal?".
