I have recently reinstalled XP Pro and all the various bits and bobs that go
with
it. Everything is up to date. I previously didn't have a problem untill my
restore.

I have downloaded various movie clips, avi, mpg, wmv etc
When I try to play ANY of these files with either RealPlayer, Windows Media
Player, QuickTime, DivX etc my PC freezes totaly. I can not use Task
Manager to shut down the apropriate player so it's a hard reboot.

What can I do to resolve this as it is driving me crazy?

Thanks for any help provided

How much RAM memory? How large is your hard disk and how much free
space?

How much use is made of the pagefile? Graphics and camera related
programmes, especially where editing is done, generate hgh demands for
memory.

Use page file monitor to observe what is the peak usage. Start it to
run immediately after start-up and look at the log at the end of the
session. The log is Pagefilelog.txt. If you right click on the file in
Windows Explorer and select Send to, Desktop (Create Shortcut). The
same applies to XP_PageFileMon.exe.

Hope this helps.

I have over 1Gb of RAM, my HDD is 250 GB with 236GB space free.
There is no other graphics or camera related software installed atm..

I m just a little lost as to why it is doing this and it never before. I
have all the latest Codecs etc but I can not play a movie clip....

Perhaps it is something wrong with my near perfect installation?

You need to determine whether your problem is memory related or
something else.

A small utility to monitor pagefile usage:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm

Have you installed Windows Media Player 11. If not hold back as there
are reports that some users are having problems. Stick with Windows
Media Player 10 for now until the problems are resolved.

Post copies of any Warnings / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs in Event Viewer from a single session. Disregard
Information Reports.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of
the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are
important.

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and
paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.
