Windows Freezes Up

I'm running Win XP Pro, SP-1.

The cursor freezes occasionally, when:
1. An update icon appears in Systray & a bubble for that icon is displayed.
2. I right-click to get a drop-down menu.
3. After Win XP loads the desktop, the cursor may freeze and I have to power
down and power-up to clear the PC. On occasion I have to do this power-down
& power-up several times.

I've run AVG on my system, and AdAware & Spybot, and Spy Sweeper. Nothing
shows up. I've been away form the PC for about 3-weeks. When I powered it
up this morning there were updates available. I installed them:
1. KB890923
2. KB893066
3. KB892944
4. KB890830
5. KB893806
6. KB 890859
7. MS Windows Installer 3.1

The problems started shortly thereafter.

Can anyone help me?
Lanny

Hi Lanny,

Did you read to see what the updates were for? Did you need them all? You
can either opt to do a repair install or check with the Updates Group. As
for the freezing issue, generally (without updates being involved) this has
to do with what is running in the background. Good luck!

experts there.

Lanny,
Did you watch the update process, and did they all finish successfully?

Hello Kelly,
Thank you for the prompt reply to my query. I did post to the NG you
suggested.

There is nothing running in the background that wasn't running when I turned
my PC off, on 4/11/05. Here's a list of what is currently running in the
background, from the "Where's James Startup Manager":
smss.exe
winlogon.exe
services.exe
lsass.exe
svchost.exe
svchost.exe
Explorer.EXE
brsvc01a.exe
spoolsv.exe
brss01a.exe
ONETOU~2.EXE
CPBrWtch.exe
realsched.exe
avgcc.exe
rnathchk.exe
avgemc.exe
zlclient.exe
SpySweeper.exe
msmsgs.exe
MSGTAGStatus.exe
schedul2.exe
KEYEXP.EXE
avgamsvr.exe
E_S10IC2.EXE
msoffice.exe
avgupsvc.exe
CDAC11BA.EXE
SAgent2.exe
svchost.exe
vsmon.exe
devldr32.exe
msimn.exe
StartupMgr.exe

Some of these are self-explanatory, some may not be; but I'll try to explain
what each does, if you need it.
Thanks again, Kelly.

Lanny one option is to try some clean boot troubleshooting to see if one
of the many processes that's loaded is causing the problem:

Another option is to do a system restore to just before the new updates
were installed. If the system is working after that, then install the
updates one at a time and test after each one to identify which one
might be the problem. As a general approach with that many updates it's
better to install them one or two at a time and see the effects before
going to the next batch.
