Windows Font Problem

After running scandisc after a power outage, the bullets and symbols used by
the OS changed from "Common Bullets" font to "Wingdings" so that when I pull
up my
Start List or a program window, all of the bullets and symbols are wrong.
How can I reset this? I have checked the Windows "Appearance" menu and
Wingdings is not selected as the font for any thing. Even the "close window"
"X" which is supposed to be in the upper right corner is not there, but
replaced by a wingding.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. I tried that, but the Icon
item font just controls the font for the writing under icons, it doesn't
change the bullets used in the system. My problem is that wingdings are being
used instead of the bullets. For instance, the X for close window is replaced
by a box, the arrows on the start menu are replaced by little mouse symbols.
By some investigation, I discovered that it was supposed to be using the font
"Commonbullets" but is using "wingdings."

Hello,

The cause outlined in this Microsoft article is not the same as yours,

Thanks, but that didn't work either. The problem is not with the font, but
with the bullets and symbols. All writing appears correctly, but none of the
bullets do. For instance, where it says "notify me of replies" below, it
should have a bullet in front to show when it is checked, but mine has some
strange symbol.

Does anyone know where the choice of bullets and symbols is? I have checked
under appearance, and there is no place to change the bullets. I guess I
need some real wonk to help.
