windows folder is huge

My 40GB hard drive started reporting low disc space. On
investigation I find the Windows folder is almost 31GB.
I then looked for a "fat" folder inside the Windows
folder, but I can't find it. Somehow the Windows folder
is chewing up the whole drive. I have run disk cleanup.
Any ideas?

BILL: I don't know the make or model or your computer
and hate to bear bad news. I have a 60GB that is doing
the same thing. When I attempt a deep virus scan it lists
2,500,000 more files than I have. And it is choking the
whole system. I have run a destructive system recovery to
no avail. Now, they tell me to remove all but keyboard
and mouse and try again.
I am going to start this in about one hour after I give
both printers a good workout. They say it is a virus.
But, I am not at all convinced of that. I might be up
again in 8-14 days. I wish you the best.

I think this is to do with system restore,

You can calm it down by right clicking my computer on the desktop, selecting
system restore, select your C drive and then select settings. From there you
can set the aount of HD space to be used.

I am not sure what happens to the files if you move the slider back down,
i.e does it remove them.

For more information put "system restore" in to "Help & Support"

Bill, obviously you got something huge in your Windows directory if it is
coming up at 31GB of space. I guess start with something easy. Go to
www.iolo.com and get yourself a copy of System Mechanic. Install it, run the
"Find and remove junk and obsolete files". This finds all kinds of junk that
Disk Cleanup misses. Also check and see how much space is being consumed by
Temporary Internet files in what ever browser(s) you may use. Also use the
file Search function in Windows and look for files above say, 20MBs, and
weed through those for logs or backups that are mo longer relevant and
Finally, stop downloading movies with Kazaa *heh*.

If you check "Properties" on the Windows folder what does it say? My system
is a little bloated. 2.13 GB 15,689 Files and 742 Folders. Not that your
numbers should be exactly like these, but being more than a magnitude away
from this suggests that something is wrong.

Regards...
