Emptying the Temp Folder

Hello,

I can't download my email. Knowledge base article 936986 says I need to
empty the Temp folder, so I ran Disk Cleanup and emptied Temporary files,
but I still can't download my email.

So I noticed that my %temp% folder, which resolves to:

C:\Documents and Settings\Shane\Local Settings\Temp\

is almost 1 GB in size (even though Disk Cleanup says that the Temporary
files size is 0). There are almost 5,000 files in the %temp% folder, dating
back to 2000.

So, does Disk Cleanup delete files in a different folder? If so, what
exactly does it clean up?

I read Leonard's link and I didn't really see where the article said
where temp was. However my %TEMP% variable does point to what you
stated (other than the user name part).

I'd just clear out the temp folder manually. I just ran cleanup on
mine, and I have a 2006 program in there and a lot of junk and its still
there. So obviously there is something going on.

However if you're short on space then this is only a stop gap you know.

More for others viewing this thread, what program are you using for
email and do you get an error message? Could you repeat it in detail.

Using Disk CleanUp only removes files relating to the User Profile you
are in at the time Disk CleanUp is run. If you share your computer with
another user it will not remove files in the other persons profile or
which have been acquired whilst running the computer as the
Administrator.

There is a better freeware alternative to Disk CleanUp.

An alternative to Disk CleanUp is cCleaner (freeware) which does a more
thorough job than Disk CleanUp. Disk CleanUp has to be run for each user
profile, whereas cCleaner only needs to be run once.

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you
should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also
offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking Autocomplete Form
History under Internet Explorer. You do get a warning but this one has
irritating consequences. You may need to restore your system's
recollection of passwords after use so keep a record off computer so
that they can easily be re-entered.

Leave the Scan for Issues option alone.

cCleaner does not remove restore points. You need to use Disk CleanUp
for this. Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest
System Restore point.
