Windows Firewall won't stay unloaded

I shut off Windows Firewall because I have Zone Alarm and I
find ZA's icon down in the tray very useful. After reading
posts, probably in this group, I shut down Windows Firewall.
I used the aplet in the control panel to do this.

But it won't stay down; When I boot up, Win firewall
reactivates itself.

I don't think that it was doing that earlier. Yesterday I
ran the check-update scan from Securia as recommend by Kim
Kommando in her column of the day. This led to updating
nine programs, none of which were Windows system files.
Other that that I haven't done anything to mess with the
startup stuff that I am aware of.

How can I shut down Windows Firewall so that it will stay
down?

I have XP (MCE)on a Dell Dimension C521.

I notice that my startup routine automatically loads Windows
Defender with the HKLM/Run list. Can that be restarting the
firewall? And would it be unwise to remove Windows Defender
just to get rid of the redundant firewall?

I can always turn the firewall off wach time I boot up, but
that's a pain.

Thanks

Jack from Taxacola,

Big bill huh!
Windows Defender has nothing to do with the firewall.
From the Windows Defender home page:
"...Windows Defender detects and removes spyware

Windows Defender is software that helps protect your computer against
pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other
unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your
computer. Windows Defender features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring
system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected, minimizes
interruptions, and helps you stay productive...."

Leave it alone.

You might want to get a fix for Zone Alarm, apparently Windows thinks there
is no other software firewall program running.

Thanks for responding. I Uninstalled and reinstalled Zone
Alarm and Windows Firewall restarts itself still.

I think I'll just leave Windows Firewall running redundantly
with Zone Alarm. I really don't want to do away with ZA,
and WF isn't that much of a drag.

Running two firewalls simultaneously can cause conflicts. Either you
didn't turn off Windows Firewall properly or one of your other programs
is causing it to run. I am crossposting this reply to
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general becuase it gets far more traffic.

I restored the system to an earlier date and the problem
went away.

Thanks to those who answered.
