Windows Firewall disabled after wutomatic update

W

wilentz

In the last set of updates, my Windows firewall was disabled and also
the Windows Zero Configuration network management was disabled. I've
run EZ antivirus and pest patrol and the MS malicious software removal
tool but none found any trouble. I think one of the updates from the
1/30 series has nuked the winsock and I don't know why. I can get
around the WZC problem by writing the restart params for it, so I can
still conneect using my wireless, but the windows firewall will not
start. When I try to start it manually it says I don't have the
rights to start it.

All help appreciated

= Run command: (Credit to the MVP Ramesh)

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132
%windir%\inf\netrass.inf

Restart Windows, and then run this command (from Command Prompt):
NETSH FIREWALL RESET
Reboot your computer and See if you can have access to turn ON the
firewall and stay next time.

= Open a Run command and type:
Services.msc click [OK]
On the services control panel make sure these services are Automatically
started.

Security Accounts Manager
Security centre
Server
Close the Services control panel and Reboot your machine.
= For the Wireless Try this:
Open a Run Command and type in:
services.msc click [OK].
On the services control Panel scroll down to Windows Zero Wireless
configuration and Be sure the service to start Automatically instead of
manually.
Click Ok then close the services control panel window and Reboot and see if
the service will hold it's settings to Auto.
If not then try this Key in the Registry:
Open Run and type in:
regedit.exe click OK and on the Registry Editor Locate this key and change
the value in the Right Pane/window to (2):
[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WZCSVC =
[ON]Start REG_DWORD 0x00000002 (2)

[-]HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc =
ON]Start REG_DWORD 0x00000004 (4)

HTH.
Let us know.

Did not help. None of those fixes held. Ultimately I did a system
restore in Safe mode to the time before I did the Windoze Updates,
then all worked well. I ran MS malware detector which detected
nothing. I then did the Win Updates one by one. ALL 19 of them!!!!!
XFOXFOXFO. Reasoned that if there was one that nuked the firewall and
Wireless Zero I'd find it, but all of the updates installed fine, and
I lost a lot of sleep but have a clean functioning system. Still wish
I understood what happened, but at least it's not happening now.

Regards and thanks for your ideas.
