Windows File Sharing Networking Problem

S

Seth Brundle

I have 3 Windows XP Professional SP2 systems behind a LinkSys WRT54G
which leads to a DSL modem. All three systems use DHCP from the
LinkSys.

All three servers are on the same Workgroup - or at least they *think*
they are - as the workgroup name for all three systems are the same.

All three systems have MS filesharing and netbios installed on their
network adapters.

All three systems can ping each other via IP, and even can make a
Remote Desktop Connection to each other *by IP address* only.

The first and second systems, when I view workgroup computers, sees
all three, and can connect to each other, but cannot connect to the
third system - the "network path is not found".

The third system is some kind of lone wolf. He can neither see nor
view shared folders on the other two systems.

I have been through the Windows Network File Sharing troubleshooter ad
nausem to no effect. I even diabled all the firewalls to no effect. I
have changed the name of the computer and rebooted several times.

The only thing that is different about this system is that it is on a
wireless node, but that was never a problem before. There is nothing
in my wireless router config which would cause problems, and never has
before.

Any help on this issue is really appreciated. I have been banging my
head against the wall on it.

Try lspfix.exe and winsockxpfix.exe, Google for both. Also, check
TCP/IP filtering in the TCP/IP protocol for the wireless and make sure
it is in the Permit All state, even if currently disabled.

Seth,

Is WF the only firewall on any of the computers?

Which computer have you rebooted several times? The problem computer, or the
master browser (see below)?

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Please provide net view for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "net view >c:\netview.txt" into the command window -
Open c:\netview.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window.

Please provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
