Windows file protection error

Hi,

I have a WinXP machine which is having some problems when
I try to install applications. Not all applications
though.

The problem is that when I install an app, e.g. project
2000, halfway during the install, it will say that there
is a windows file protection error and require me to put
in my WinXP CD. It does not give me an option to point
to the i386 directory which is residing in the harddisk
and to continue with the installation,I have to insert
the CD. This is fine on my own machine, but for my
users, they do not actually have access to a winxp CD
easily. Also, this only happens on some machines and not
others, so i am not sure what I can check or do to
rectify this.

Hi,

On the other machines, copy the I386 directory to the hard drive. Then
start/run regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Locate the sourcepath string and double-click it. Change the path statement
here to match the location of the I386 directory you just copied to hard
drive.

In addition to Rick's answer:

If the source files are located at C:\Windows\i386 path, you need to given the SourcePath value as "C:\Windows" and not "C:\Windows\i386" [also works for some configurations].

BTW, FP2000 installation has overwritten the core system files [to an older version] and that's why the File Protection dialog comes up.
