Windows Explorer

I think it is reasonable to assume that once configured the option to view
'Details' in Windows Explorer should not change until it is re-configured.
Having said that my old computer had a habit (several times a day) to change
from 'Details' to 'Icons' which was very annoying. I thought it may be an
error somewhere within the software. However. I now have a new computer
freshly installed with Windows XP Pro which is doing the same thing - which
makes it even more annoying still.

Has anyone seen this problem and know how to fix it please?

Thanks.

Maybe one of these:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Line 85. Set Detail View for all Folders Open/Save As

Also go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm and click "D".
Scroll down to "Detail View" and see the many suggestions listed there.

Elmo,
the OP is not talking about being able to see the "detailed" view in "Open
As..." / "Save As..." dialog boxes.

But has the problem of having once set "detailed view" in a folder...

(and, presumably, pressing on the "Reset All Folders" button in "Folder Options" >
View )

....finds that (the default view of ) folders are then returning to be seen as "view
as icons"!!

This is a problem I can attest to having seen in XP wherever the XP os installed.

Indeed - *many* options (usually "inconsequential" aesthetic options) often "revert"
back to either their old values or change, seemingly at random, to other
configurations not of my choosing!

It is just something, to a lesser or greater extent, common to most Windows
versions - but XP in particular.

Just count myself lucky that this "quirk" of XP's doesn't usually affect more serious
system and hardware configuration settings and is usually just limited to Window's
"appearance" and "effects" options...

OK, thanks. I believe Kelly's ABC page addresses that, but I didn't
look that closely.

Merry Christmas.

I think not, I believe the Kelly's item on the "XP Tweaks" page concerns the setting
of the Open / Save As... dialog boxes only
(http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Item No. 85).

The Kelly's item in question re-directs you to a [3rd-party] download
(FileOpenPatcher.exe) that "hacks" the file "Comdlg32.dll" which is responsible for
the "Open" and "Save As..." dialogs.

It does this in order for you to specify the size of the dialogs and makes them
appear in "Detailed" view by default.

All this has no effect on the way Windows Explorer displays it's folder views,
however.

The only setting I have found that may have an effect is this :

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
"Bag MRU Size"=dword:00000FA0

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
"Bag MRU Size"=dword:00000FA0

The above registry setting sets the number of "remembered" folder views.
Set it to 4000 (Hex: FA0)

This setting is also available in XP's TweakUI.exe under "Explorer" >
"Customizations"

TweakUI :
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

You should also make sure that the setting in "Control Panel" > "Folder Options" >
"View" tab > "Remember each folder's view settings" has a "checkmark" in the box.
